Many different people buy and use medical supplies: not just hospitals and local doctors. There are of course those who provide medical and complimentary therapies such as podiatry and osteopathy and then there are business and public sector organizations that need medicals supplies that could be a decent first aid kit right up to a full medical office setup for a school or other large organization. Consumables are a big area where you may be able to save, probably when buying expensive equipment you search around for the best price, with a disposable pair of gloves though you may not see the same potential for saving. Disposable gloves cost a fraction of a cent each most likely but you do get through a few cents worth a day and a few dollars worth a week, and that is if there is just the one of you: if you are buying for an entire surgery then you may be spending tens of thousands of dollars each year on consumables and the savings you could get from shopping around for suppliers could be quite substantial.

If you only have a small clinic or treatment room such as if you are a dentist or a podiatrist then you may have less leverage when it comes to price but it is still worth shopping around. If you are setting up for the first time you need to make sure the equipment you do buy is exactly what you need. If you are a dentist for example you will need an examination chair where you can easily view patients’ mouths and if you are a podiatrist you will need to easily get to their feet: these are two different chair designs but comfort and how easy it is to move patients is also important.


In any area of medicine cleanliness is important most importantly where blood is involved but also for other equipment that comes into contact with patients. This includes tools: they should be made of easy to clean medical steel where possible and you may need an autoclave to sterilize them. This includes if you are a dentist and a podiatrist as much as if you are a surgeon. With podiatry for example a fungal infection could easily be spread if items aren’t properly cleaned between patients.
